So you’re in the market for a Mermaid Tail Blanket huh? Now what? You have searched all over the internet and feel overwhelmed by the choices. I get it! I was there.
Hopefully these 4 questions will help you narrow down which type of Mermaid Tail Blanket you want to buy, and not get overwhelmed.
1. What material do I want for my Mermaid Tail blanket?
The choices are Fabric, or Yarn.
The large majority are crochet Mermaid blankets, made from Yarn. I personally like the yarn blankets better. They are more flexible, as well as breathable. The fabric tails seem to be more tubs or sleeping bags which can get hot, as well as hard to get in and out of as they lack the slit in the back from the knees up. Most fabric blankets will have your feet come to a point at the end of the tail (which gets uncomfortable quick). There are fabric blankets that open up into the end of the fins to put your feet, which is a better option.
With the Crochet Mermaid Blankets, they have a slit (from the knees up on the back) so you can easily get in and out of. The ends are open, or at least provide some space for your feet to move around. The last thing I like about the yarn blankets are, they look better with decor.
If you are in the market for a fabric blanket, go for it! My nieces love theirs. The materials are usually made from fleece, crystal velvet, or a soft minky fabric. Some even shimmer with scale patters. That’s fun!
2. What Style do I want?
Because the majority of blankets are made from yarn, the rest of the blog is going to focus on the different types of Crochet mermaid blankets.
The 3 main styles of Crochet Mermaid Blankets
- Basic Tail – Standard crochet pattern
- Patterned Tail – Different designed crochet stitch throughout the tail
- Scaled Tail – the crochet patter to imitate scales

4. What Color do I want
I am not sure I can help you much here… All I can say is: there are plenty to choose from.
I wish I could recommend a brand or company but… I can’t. The Mermaid blankets I have are from Amazon and I am very happy with them. Since there are SO many options, my best suggestion is looking at the reviews and see what people that actually bought the product have to say. That sounds like a no brainer but since you have zero’ed in on which kind you want to purchase, it should make the process easier.
Let me know if you have any questions!
